1965 out by coup lead by Bokassa.
1979 Dacko back in as president by a coup.
1981 Out by coup led by General André Kolingba.

Jean–Bédel Bokassa:
1966–1979                13 years                1972
In by coup.
1976 He crowns himself Emperor.
Had 17 wives.
Brutal rule; bankrupts country.
Massacres 100 schoolchildren who were disrespectful toward him.
1979 Out by coup led by French paratroops that reinstate Dacko as president.
1979 Bokassa flees into exile in France.
1980 Sentenced in absentia to death.
1986 Returned, put on trial, found guilty of the murders of schoolchildren and other crimes.
1993 Freed by general amnesty of all prisoners.
      Died of heart attack in 1996.
