Salvador Allende:
1970–1973
He nationalizes businesses and foreign industries, confiscates farmland and gives to peasants. Economy collapses, inflation
600 % annually, industrial and agricultural production plummets. Riots and strikes.
Out by coup, and found dead in his palace. Died 1973.
General Augusto Pinochet:
1973–1990 17 years 1979
In by coup.
Uses terror and repression of human rights. Imprisons 100,000+, executes thousands.
1973 disappearance of 70 political opponents known as "Caravan of Death."
He restores hundreds of nationalized industries to previous owners, including dozens of U.S. corporations. U.S. sends him
billion dollars in aid.
Remains head of army 1990–1998, and then receives permanent senate post.
1998, Spanish judge seeks to extradite Pinochet while in London for surgery. English House of Lords rules no diplomatic
immunity since Pinochet there for medical reasons and can thus be put on trial for crimes against humanity.
2000 Pinochet returns to Chile where Supreme Court removes his immunity and he is arrested. Claims of ill health delay
his trial.
2003, 300 military officers indicted for disappearances in early dictatorship years.
