1958 independence.
1958–1984 Sekou Toure is president. Dictator, no tolerance for human rights, free expression or opposition.  
Imprisons 1000’s.  Drives 1,000,000 into exile.  Devastates economy.
1984 Died in office after 26 years as president.
1984 Military junta under Lt. Colonel Lansana Conte seizes power.
1993 Conte reelected president.
1996 Thousands of malcontent troops mutiny, destroy presidential offices and kill, but coup fails.
1996 Conte arrests the mutiny soldiers.
1998 Conte reelected to another 5-year term.  Cronyism and corruption.
2000 Rebel army attacks and destroys many villages causing refugee problems.
2000 President Conte accuses refugees in country of supporting rebels.  Soldiers, police, and civilian militia beat
and rape thousands of refugees.
2003 Conte reelected
2005 Conte ill; his motorcade fired upon.
2006 Conte has been president for 22 years
