Sergeant Samuel Doe:

Charles Taylor:

Ousted by UN embargos and the U.S. Marines.
Indicted by UN court for atrocities and genocide.
Flees into exile in Nigeria.
2006 Taylor is captured while fleeing Nigeria to avoid arrest.  He was carrying two 110-pound sacks full of dollars and
euros.
2006 imprisoned in Sierra Leone war crimes tribunal, then transferred to UN tribunal in The Hague.

Aftermath: In 2004 a UN and World Bank study said $487 million in aid was now needed to stabilize the country,
including rehabilitationg thousands of child soldiers, and girls conscripted as sexual slaves. U.S. Secretary of State Colin
L. Powell pledges $200 million.

2006 Johnson-Sirleaf becomes Africa’s first democratically elected female president.  She asked to have Taylor extradited
