1961 independence from Britain.
1961 Sir Milton Margai is Prime Minister.
1964 Sir Milton dies. His half-brother, Sir Albert Margai, succeeds him.
1967 Siaka Stevens is elected Prime Minister. Next day Brigadier David Lansana places both Stevens and Margai
under house arrest.
1967 Other officers stage a second coup, to be later ousted in third coup, the "sergeants’ revolt."
1968–1985 Siaka Stevens is president.
Government supporters enriched at public expense.
1978 Student protests.
1985 Head of army, General Joseph Saidu Momoh assumes power. Continues corruption, abuses of power, failure of
economy.
1992 Violent coup led by Captain Valentine E.M. Strasser ousts Momoh into exile.
1992 Suspension of all political activity. Harsh military rule. Fighting the rebels.
1996 Ahmad Tejan Kabbah is elected president.
1997 coup led by Major Johnny Paul Koroma, overthrows President Kabbah.
1998 The junta is ousted, and President Kabbah is reinstated.
1999 Bloody coup kills thousands.
1999–2000 UN peacekeeping force.
2000 Rebels restart civil war.
2002 Civil war ends.
2002 President Kabbah is reelected.
2002 UN force reduced from 17,500 to 4,000.
2003 Former junta leader Johnny Paul Koroma leads raid on armory.
2003 UN Special Court for Sierra Leone re crimes against humanity indicts many involved in civil war and coups,
including President Charles Taylor of Liberia.
2006 Ahmad Tejan Kabbah is still president.
